Our Job is Safety Assessment

As diagnostic imaging evolves, we take pride in innovating x-ray radiation measurement and testing to confirm patient and worker safety.

Innovative and the Hanson Family

On the road, wing and water in British Columbia since 1971...

"I must have been 10 years old at Esperanza, a tiny village on the west coast of Vancouver Island, where Dad took us aboard the M.V. Uchuck III to fix their dental x-ray."

Kimberley Hanson

1971: Daniel Hanson, BSc PEng Physics UBC, (previously a logger and commercial fisherman) started out at Picker X-ray installing and servicing X-ray units. A growing family required he stay closer to home and he became the first ever Biomedical Engineer (the term and role did not exist prior) in-house at Campbell River General Hospital. Dan developed a trap-line of health centres in remote communities on the British Columbia coast where he maintained essential medical equipment and put his engineering mind to use in a million ways, solving problems unique to small, isolated villages.

At the same time, Mary homesteaded a hobby farm in the Comox Valley raising the family, 500+ chickens, pigs, geese and putting up most of the year's food from her prolific gardens. Her talent for gardening would eventually grow into an offshoot from Dan's engineering business with seedling production for reforestation and moss hanging baskets with 8 commercial greenhouses and 25 acres under production including a u-cut Christmas tree operation.

2000:  Time for a change, a timely invitation to tender proposals from the BC Dental Association (BCDA) resulted in Dan and Mary accepting a contract that involved visiting each dental office in BC, conducting radiation protection surveys. Similar contracts with Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the BC First Nations Health Authority followed.

After their daughter, Kimberley, joined the business they began to think about slowing down. During Covid, they relocated back to their families' roots in Powell River where they currently live with their beloved dogs and, of course, a greenhouse in full production!

2026: Kimberley continues to provide X-ray radiation protection services to dental and veterinary practices. Her home base is also Powell River although she's usually on the road (or wing or water!) visiting practices in the lower mainland and Vancouver Island.

The adventures and stories gathered over 55 years serving British Columbia's medical establishment are an incredibly rich tapestry for the Hanson's.

"We are very grateful to have visited almost every inch of BC."

Daniel and Mary Hanson

We specialize in radiation safety surveys and compliance in accordance with Health Canada Safety Codes and other federal and provincial governing bodies and agencies.

The current standards for radiation protection in British Columbia dental and veterinary practices is a compilation of Health Canada's Safety Code 28: Radiation Protection in Veterinary Medicine or Safety Code 30: Radiation Protection in Dentistry,  the federal Radiation Emitting Devices (R.E.D.) Act and Regulations and WorksafeBC OHS Guidelines Part 7 Section 3.

WorksafeBC is the overall provincial regulator for radiation safety and also acts as compliance body for worker radiation safety. The BC College of Oral Health Professionals (BCCOHP) provides compliance oversight promoting radiation protection in patient health.

We are committed to solid standards of excellence in both x-ray safety and quality assurance. As such, in 2025 we began a collaboration with other provincial inspection agencies that resulted in the formation of XRAA Registration and Accreditation Association. XRAA's role is:

  • to standardize inspection protocol,
  • provide professional oversight to member inspection agencies,
  • review inspection reports for accuracy and thoroughness,
  • provide trusted certification, assuring industry that accepted radiation protection standards have been met
  • and serve as a registry for privately owned x-ray equipment, thus fulfilling a needed resource for both practices and provincial compliance bodies.

We're proud to offer XRAA certificates and services to our dental practice customers as a symbol of our dedication to excellence.
